Prince William and Kate Slammed Over Birthday Puppy Post as PETA Calls Them “Out of Touch”
What started as a sweet birthday message quickly spiralled into controversy for the Prince and Princess of Wales this week, after a seemingly innocent photo of Prince William playing with puppies drew unexpected backlash online.
To celebrate William’s 43rd birthday on 21 June, Princess Kate shared a warm, candid snap of the future king enjoying a moment with their dog Orla and her new litter of puppies. The photo, posted to social media, was signed off sweetly by Kate with: “Happy birthday! Love C, G, C, L, Orla and the puppies!”
— a charming nod to the couple’s children, Charlotte, George, Louis, and of course, their beloved spaniel.
However, not everyone was feeling the love.
Animal rights charity PETA was quick to criticise the post, accusing the royal couple of being “staggeringly out of touch” for breeding dogs rather than adopting. Speaking to GB News, Elisa Allen, PETA’s Vice President of Programmes, didn’t mince her words.
“The Prince and Princess of Wales should know that shelters here and worldwide are overflowing with puppies desperate for a second chance at a loving home, and that churning out a litter in the midst of this animal homelessness crisis is staggeringly out of touch,” she said.
She went on to suggest the royal couple could take a page out of King Charles and Queen Camilla’s book.
“If William is going to lead, he might well take a lesson from King Charles and Queen Camilla, who have chosen to adopt from a shelter rather than contribute to the problem.”
The comment refers to Queen Camilla’s recent decision to adopt a rescue puppy named Moley following the death of her cherished dog Beth, who had long been a staple of royal dog-watching.
The Waleses have not publicly responded to the criticism, and many royal fans have leapt to their defence, pointing out that the post was simply a heartfelt family photo and not a statement on animal welfare. Still, the controversy has reignited ongoing conversations about ethical pet ownership, especially among high-profile figures who influence public opinion.
While some saw the post as a charming look into royal family life, others felt it sent the wrong message at a time when shelters are overwhelmed and adoption remains a key talking point in animal welfare circles.
It’s not the first time the royals have been at the centre of a debate about modern values and public perception, and it likely won’t be the last.
