Stephen Mulhern Quits Butlin’s After “Year from Hell” as He Plots Major Career Comeback

Stephen Mulhern has made a surprise career move that’s caught many fans off guard—he’s officially stepping away from his much-loved £1 million Butlin’s magic show, bringing an end to three years of entertaining thousands of holidaymakers across the UK.

The 48-year-old TV presenter, best known for his roles on shows like Catchphrase and In For A Penny, has been a regular face at Butlin’s resorts in Minehead, Bognor Regis and Skegness, performing a family-friendly magic show that’s been a crowd favourite since it launched.

But after what he’s described as a “year from hell”, Mulhern has decided it’s time to take a step back and focus on new projects.

In a statement shared with the Daily Mail, a spokesperson confirmed: “Stephen has absolutely loved being part of the Butlin’s family – performing his stage shows in front of thousands of holidaymakers across the country – and the relationship with Butlin’s remains hugely positive.”

They added that the move “allows Stephen to explore new opportunities in the family holiday space – something he’s incredibly passionate about.”

The decision comes just weeks after it was revealed that two of Mulhern’s primetime shows, Dancing on Ice and In For A Penny, were being cancelled—something fans took hard, with many voicing disappointment on social media. It marked a tough stretch for the usually upbeat presenter, who’s built a career on good humour, magic, and crowd-pleasing charm.

In a recent interview, Mulhern revealed he broke down in tears while filming his upcoming travel series, The Accidental Tourist, calling the past 12 months a “year from hell”. While he didn’t go into full detail, the emotional moment shows just how much he’s been carrying behind the scenes.

Despite the setbacks, Mulhern is far from disappearing. He’s still fronting ITV’s Catchphrase, recently revived Deal or No Deal, and the new travel-themed project The Accidental Tourist, which he’s said to be “incredibly excited” about. He’s also gearing up to host a reboot of You Bet, a nostalgic favourite from the 80s and 90s, marking what could be a fresh chapter in his already storied TV career.

Fans online have rallied behind him, with messages of support flooding in. Many see this as a strategic step rather than a retreat—a chance for Mulhern to reset and take on projects that align more with his personal goals.

So while it’s the end of an era for Butlin’s guests hoping to catch a Mulhern magic show on holiday, it seems this is just the beginning of a new act in his career.
