Netflix Regrets Huge Deal with Harry and Meghan as Experts Call Them the Most Boring Investment Ever
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are once again making headlines, but this time not for any royal drama or red carpet appearance. According to experts, their multimillion-pound Netflix deal might be one of the streaming platform’s biggest flops.
Since stepping back from royal duties, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been working with Netflix to create content under their Archewell Productions banner. But it seems not everyone is convinced they’re actually serious about the job.
Royal expert Esther Okraku didn’t hold back when speaking to The Sun, saying, “I think Netflix are going to have to swallow the fact that they’ve invested in the world’s most boring and unprofitable couple.”
She compared Netflix’s decision to Spotify’s, pointing out how the music streaming giant pulled out of its deal with the couple not long after it began. “Spotify realised quite early on and got out early,” she said.
Esther also questioned whether Meghan herself even cares about the outcome of the venture. “I really don’t think the public understands just how little is at stake for Meghan,” she said. “Like, who cares if it ever fails? It wasn’t exactly a passion project.”
Their Netflix output has been limited so far, with just a couple of headline-grabbing documentaries, and a series about polo in the works, which has already been slammed by critics before it’s even aired. Author Phil Dampier weighed in too, saying that despite the lukewarm reception to their projects, Netflix seems to be sticking with them for now.
“I think having invested $100 million in the shows that they did – and the thing about polo, which [was] universally panned – but I mean, they’ve obviously made a decision,” he said. “They’re going to stick with them for the time being.”
He suggested the streaming giant is taking the approach of riding it out in hopes of making back at least some of the money. “They’re going to go for it, and they’re going in for a penny, in for a pound. And, you know, if they can get some money back with the merchandising, great,” he added.
So while Netflix might still be clinging to the hope that their royal investment will eventually pay off, experts are beginning to see the deal as a major misstep. For Meghan and Harry, who reportedly pocketed tens of millions from the partnership, there may not be much on the line. But for Netflix, the pressure to turn things around is only growing.
