Meghan Markle accused of controlling royal staff and pushing to make relationship with Harry public

Meghan Markle is once again facing claims that she tried to control those around her during her time in the UK, with a royal author alleging she enjoyed managing situations and disrupting spontaneity.

The Duchess of Sussex has been accused in the past of bullying staff, and biographer Tom Bower suggests she liked to be firmly in charge. Writing in his book Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the war between the Windsors, Bower says: “In Meghan Markle’s life, little happened by chance. Beyond the empathetic smile was a woman who disrupted spontaneity and liked to control every aspect of her life. In late September 2016 nothing was more important than her relationship with Harry”, reported the Express.

Bower claims that during this period, Meghan wanted her relationship with Prince Harry to be known publicly. “Most at the party were in no doubt that Meghan was ‘outing’ Harry. For her own good reasons she wanted the relationship to be publicized. In media hype, so me would call it the ‘Greatest Story since the Abdication’,” he wrote.

The comments come against the backdrop of Meghan’s own account of her final incognito Halloween night with Harry, which she shared during an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’ chat show. “He came to see me in Toronto and our friends and his cousin Eugenie and now her husband Jack, they came as well, and the four of us snuck out in Halloween costumes to just have one fun night on the town before it was out in the world that we were a couple. It was a post-apocalypse theme, so we had all this very bizarre costuming on, and we were able to just have one fun final night out,” Meghan recalled.

Her version of events paints a picture of two people trying to hold on to privacy before their relationship became front-page news, while Bower’s account suggests Meghan was eager to move in the opposite direction and take control of how the story unfolded.

The clash between the two perspectives feeds into the ongoing debate about Meghan’s role within the royal family and whether she sought to challenge traditional structures during her short-lived time as a working royal.
