England Beat World Champions in Euros Final and the Nation Is Buzzing About What Happens Next
England have done it. The Lionesses pulled off a heart-pounding victory on Sunday night, edging past reigning World Champions Spain in the 2025 Women’s Euros final. After a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, the celebrations kicked off and haven’t really stopped since.
Spain looked like they might spoil the party early on, with Mariona Caldentey firing them into the lead. But that didn’t rattle the Lionesses. They held their nerve and turned up the heat. Shortly before the hour mark, Alessia Russo smashed in a well-deserved equaliser, sending England fans into a frenzy and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
When it all came down to penalties, England kept their cool. Alex Greenwood, Niamh Charles, and Chloe Kelly — who’s fast becoming something of a national icon — slotted theirs home with ice in their veins. That was all it took. England were crowned European champions in front of a roaring crowd at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, reported Sportbible.
As the celebrations kicked off, tributes poured in from across the country, with fans, former players, and celebrities all jumping online to share their excitement. And now, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has joined the chorus of voices congratulating the squad.
Starmer has been a vocal supporter of the Lionesses throughout the tournament, often posting updates and praise during their journey through the competition. He didn’t miss a beat after the final whistle either.
“Champions! Congratulations Lionesses— what a team. What a game. What drama,” he posted on X. “You dug deep when it mattered most and you’ve made the nation proud. History makers.”
While the message went down well with supporters, many had something else on their minds. It didn’t take long for fans to flood the replies, urging the Prime Minister to declare a bank holiday to mark the moment.
It’s not the first time Starmer has backed the idea. Back in 2023, when England were on the cusp of winning the Women’s World Cup, he called for a celebratory bank holiday if they brought home the trophy. At the time, he was still Leader of the Opposition, but made it clear that such a landmark achievement deserved national recognition.
“They have already done us proud, but if they win it will be a truly historic achievement,” he said then. “One that should be marked with a proper day of celebration, where clubs can open and promote access for women and girls.”
England just missed out back then, but this time it’s different. Starmer, now nearly a year into his premiership after Labour’s 2024 election victory, actually has the power to make good on that promise.
Fans are waiting to see what he’ll do. The victory is being hailed not just as a sporting triumph, but a cultural milestone. From pubs to playgrounds, it’s all anyone’s talking about. The only question now is whether the country will get a well-earned day off to soak it all in.
