Meghan Holds the Power as Harry and King Charles Try to Patch Things Up Behind Closed Doors

It turns out Meghan Markle may be the one holding the keys to Prince Harry’s future with the Royal Family, as reports suggest she’ll ultimately decide how far any peace talks between Harry and King Charles will go.

While Harry and the King are said to be quietly working towards mending their relationship, sources now say it’s Meghan’s stance that could make or break the whole thing. The Duchess of Sussex, who lives in California with their children Archie and Lilibet, isn’t directly involved in the current conversations — but her influence over how things progress is impossible to ignore.

Speaking to GB News, former Sun royal correspondent Charles Rae described Meghan as “the fly in the ointment,” hinting that despite Harry and Charles both seemingly wanting to move on, Meghan could still be a major roadblock in any real reconciliation.

It’s been more than five years since Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties and relocated to the US, and in that time, tensions have only grown. According to royal expert Emily Ferguson, the pair’s decision to leave the Firm, dubbed “Megxit,” caused serious damage — not just between father and son, but with the wider Royal Family too.

Ferguson writes in the Express, “Father and son have had a fraught relationship since Harry and Meghan decided to quit as senior royals in favour of a new life in America. In the five years since Megxit, the couple have levelled numerous public attacks at the Firm, souring relations with not just the King, but the wider Royal Family.”

From televised interviews to documentaries and memoirs, the Sussexes haven’t held back when it comes to criticising royal life — and it’s left scars that even time hasn’t fully healed. But despite everything, the current tone behind the scenes seems to be more hopeful than it’s been in a long while.

Ferguson adds, “No battle lines were drawn, simply an informal conversation between two sides who clearly want the same thing: a way forward and an end to the bitter feud that has engulfed the House of Windsor.”

While nothing’s been made official, the fact that father and son are even having these conversations is being seen as progress. But for any real reconciliation to stick, many believe it won’t just be up to Harry and Charles. Meghan’s input — or lack of it — could tip the balance either way.

With the family still feeling the fallout from years of public drama, it’s unlikely things will magically go back to how they were. But behind palace doors, there appears to be a growing desire to move past the hurt and find common ground. Whether that actually happens, though, might all depend on what Meghan decides next.
