Jeremy Clarkson Shreds Starmer Over Welfare U Turn and Says He’s Just Saving His Own Job

Jeremy Clarkson hasn’t held back once again, this time turning his fire on Prime Minister Keir Starmer after the Labour leader’s sudden U-turn on welfare reform. The former Top Gear presenter slammed the decision to backtrack after Labour MPs pushed back hard against the original plans, forcing Starmer to water them down significantly.

The changes were expected to save around £5 billion a year by 2030, but after the rebellion, the government retreated, and critics are now saying it could prove to be a costly climbdown, reported GB News.

Clarkson, 65, made his feelings crystal clear in his latest column, saying, “If he’d roared at his backbenchers and pushed the original bill through, it would have been good for the country. But if he squeakily abandoned it, it would save his job. So he did that. Because all the animals are equal etc.”

He didn’t stop there either. Turning up the heat, Clarkson raged about what he sees as the government’s complete lack of political sense. “What annoys me about this whole sorry saga, though, is how this government is so blind to nuance and political nous.”

He dragged in another issue too, pointing to what he called clumsy handling of family farm tax plans. “They could have used a sniper’s rifle to take out the rich bastards they were after. But being thick, potato-faced communists, they used a blunderbuss and hit absolutely everyone. And then they did it again with the welfare reform bill.”

Writing in The Times, the Clarkson’s Farm star touched on the heart of the debate, saying most people understand that there are many in the UK dealing with real and serious disabilities and mental health issues, and they absolutely need support.

But, he argued, there’s also a growing number who are simply gaming the system. “There are literally millions of people who pretend to have disabilities and mental health issues so they can sit at home all day, using our money to pay for their vulgarsonic television sets.”

His solution? “Well you or I would task a government department to develop a system that would work out who’s for real and who’s scrounging.” But he questioned whether such a department could actually exist in today’s political climate. “That’s where the problems start because where, in this day and age, do you find a government employee who thinks like that?”

Clarkson didn’t hold back on Starmer either, bluntly calling him “a Marxist” despite the Labour leader’s attempts to appear fiscally responsible. “Yes, Sir Starmer put on a smart suit and said reasonable things about how the state needed to balance the books. Even Tony Blair was taken in. But in order to get any of these sensible policies across the line, he needs the support of the Marxists on his back benches. And he doesn’t have that. And deep down, he doesn’t really mind because, let’s not forget, he’s a Marxist too.”

This latest rant follows Clarkson’s earlier digs at Starmer, including one last month where he mocked the PM’s ambitions to strengthen the UK’s military in light of global threats, particularly from Russia. Writing in The Sun, he quipped, “According to Starmer, we’d go from a country that can’t even stop a rubber dinghy reaching the shores of Kent to a country that would shake fear into the entire Russian naval machine.”
