Martin Lewis Schools Richard Arnold Over NTA Seat Filler Claim

Things got a bit awkward on Good Morning Britain when money saving expert Martin Lewis had to correct presenter Richard Arnold live on air about how the National Television Awards really work.

The moment came during Wednesday’s show while they were chatting with Coronation Street’s Mollie Gallagher about her early days as an NTA seat filler before landing her role as Nina Lucas. Richard, clearly trying to relate, joked “I’ve never won a gong at the NTAs but I’m always welcomed every year as a seat-filler so that’s something, I’m still in the building!”

But Martin, who actually has an NTA trophy on his shelf, wasn’t having it. The financial guru quickly stepped in to set the record straight. “To defend the NTAs – having won one – the seat-fillers are actually for when you have to go up and do interviews afterwards, it’s not empty seats, it’s because you’re going off to do interviews afterwards”, reported the Manchester Evening News.

Richard tried to save face by quipping “They have plenty of bums on seats, of course,” before quickly changing tack to flatter Martin. “You’ll be getting another one, don’t worry about it!”

Co-host Susanna Reid couldn’t resist joining in the fun, teasing “They’re not going to take it away from you!” as Martin modestly pointed out he’s often up against broadcasting legend David Attenborough in his category.

The lighthearted exchange gave viewers a peek behind the curtain of how awards shows actually operate. While Richard might fancy himself as professional seat warmer, Martin was quick to point out those temporary occupants serve an important purpose – keeping the auditorium looking full while winners dash off for their backstage interviews.

It’s not the first time Martin’s financial expertise has come in handy on the ITV sofa, though this time he was putting his awards show knowledge to work instead of his money saving tips. The moment proved that even veteran presenters like Richard can get things wrong sometimes, and it takes a real NTA winner to know how things really work behind the scenes.

The good-natured ribbing continued throughout the segment, showing the easy chemistry between the GMB team. While Richard might not have an NTA of his own yet, at least he’s got a regular seat on the morning show – and this time, no fillers required.
