Martin Lewis Reveals the Three Letter Text That Can Cut Your Phone Bill Instantly

Martin Lewis is back with another no-nonsense money-saving tip, and this time it’s for anyone with a mobile phone. If you’re out of contract, there’s a chance you’re overpaying massively – and all it takes is one simple text to start saving.

On the latest episode of The Martin Lewis Podcast, available on BBC Sounds, Spotify and Apple Music, the Money Saving Expert founder shared an easy method that could slash phone bills in seconds. According to Martin, around 14 million people in the UK are out of contract and could switch to a better deal immediately, reported Belfast Live.

The first step, he says, is finding out whether you’re still tied to your current contract. Just text INFO to 85075. It’s free, and it’ll tell you if you’re free to leave your provider without penalty. If you’re with networks like Three, Smarty or ID Mobile, you may also need to send your date of birth to confirm.

Once you’ve confirmed you’re free to switch, it’s time to look for a better deal. Martin recommends using price comparison sites to track down SIM-only plans that suit your needs – and the savings can be massive. He mentioned that you can now get 150GB of data for just over a fiver a month.

One important trick is to check virtual networks that use the same signal as the big players. While the UK only has four main mobile networks – Vodafone, EE, O2, and Three – many smaller providers piggyback off their signals. That means you can get the exact same coverage from companies like Smarty (which uses Three) or Tesco Mobile (which uses O2), but for a lot less cash.

But the real trick comes in the final step – and this is where Martin says a bit of cheek can save you even more. If you’re out of contract and you want to switch, all you need to do is text PAC to 65075. That code allows you to take your current phone number with you when you move to a new network.

Here’s the interesting part though. When you do this, your current provider often panics and tries to tempt you to stay. “Often when you do this, if you’re out of contract, your existing provider will say, please don’t go and will often include in that an offer to keep you,” Martin explained. “It’s virtually a way of haggling.”

So even if you’re not quite ready to move, pretending you are could land you a better deal. “If you’re very cheeky, and while I prefer you do all four steps, just text PAC to 65075, pretend that you’re leaving and see if they offer you a better deal to stay,” he added.

It’s a brilliantly simple tactic, and one that many people might not realise is available. With SIM prices currently at rock bottom, Martin reckons now’s the perfect time to take a closer look at your mobile bill – especially if you haven’t switched in a while.
