Tears Tensions and Rumours as Rachel Reeves at Centre of Westminster Storm

Downing Street has been quick to shoot down growing speculation that Sir Keir Starmer is about to give Chancellor Rachel Reeves the boot after she was spotted looking visibly upset during a fiery session of Prime Minister’s Questions.

Despite Starmer dodging a direct question in the Commons about whether Reeves would stay in post until the next General Election, No10 was having none of it. A spokesperson stepped in firmly, saying, “The Chancellor is going nowhere. She has the Prime Minister’s full backing.” They added that Starmer “doesn’t need to repeat it every time the Leader of the Opposition speculates about Labour politicians”, reported London Evening Standard.

The whole storm kicked off when Tory frontbencher Kemi Badenoch pushed the Prime Minister on whether he could guarantee Reeves would remain Chancellor. Starmer swerved the question and instead took a swipe at the opposition, claiming they were left to fix a £22 billion black hole inherited from the previous government.

He didn’t miss the chance for a jab, either, saying, “She [Badenoch] certainly won’t [be in post at the next election]… she always makes a complete mess of it and shows just how unserious and irrelevant they are.” Badenoch hit back with a cutting comment: “How awful for the Chancellor that he couldn’t confirm that she will stay in place.”

But behind the scenes, the story was taking another turn. GB News reported that Reeves became emotional after a confrontation with Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle and a separate exchange with a senior Government figure.

Apparently, Reeves had been pulled up by Hoyle on Tuesday for giving lengthy answers during Treasury questions. The tension reportedly carried over into Wednesday morning, when Hoyle raised the issue again. That’s when Reeves, according to those present, “burst into tears.” Witnesses claimed the Chancellor is “under pressure,” with one Cabinet Minister suggesting something had happened moments earlier during a private conversation with a senior Government figure.

No11 didn’t deny that Reeves had been upset, only confirming it was “a personal matter,” and saying, “The Chancellor will be working out of Downing Street this afternoon.”

The Prime Minister’s team has also gone out of its way to point out what they see as Reeves’ achievements in office. “It’s thanks to the Chancellor’s management of the economy that we managed to restore stability,” the No10 spokesperson said. They credited her with helping bring about interest rate cuts, seeing wages rise faster than inflation, and leading a spending review focused on what they’re calling Britain’s “national renewal.”

To add a final note of clarity, Downing Street also said Starmer still has confidence in the Work and Pensions Secretary, simply replying, “Yes,” when asked.

So while the Westminster rumour mill spins and Reeves clearly seems to be feeling the weight of it all, the official line is firm: she’s staying, she’s supported, and she’s still front and centre of Labour’s economic plan.
