Susanna Reid Makes Surprise BBC Comeback After More Than a Decade

Susanna Reid has made a surprise return to the BBC, over a decade after walking away from the broadcaster that launched her career. Fans of the Good Morning Britain presenter were buzzing with excitement as she popped back up on familiar turf, showing up on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg like she’d never left.

The 54-year-old, who took a short breather from her ITV breakfast gig earlier this year, shared the news on Instagram with a glowing behind-the-scenes snap alongside Daniel Kebede and James Harding. Her caption read, “SUNDAY! Always fantastic to be on @bbclaurak back at the BBC,” with a little reassurance that she’d be back on GMB bright and early the next day.

Susanna originally started out at BBC News 24 before moving on to co-host BBC Breakfast from 2003 to 2014 with Bill Turnbull and Charlie Stayt. She also fronted Sunday Morning Live for a bit in 2010 and 2011. But it was in 2014 that she made the bold leap to ITV to help launch Good Morning Britain, where she’s been a morning staple ever since, reported Metro.co.uk.

Despite her long-standing role on GMB, her recent BBC appearance had fans reminiscing about the early days. Comments flooded in on her post, with one fan calling it a “nice surprise” and another saying “pleasant surprise” – typo and all. Someone else shared, “Good memories from BBC news back in the days I used to watch you,” while another gushed, “You were brilliant Susanna and it was great to see you on a Sunday.”

It wasn’t just a nostalgia trip though. Susanna sparked a fair bit of chatter after joking that Labour leader Keir Starmer might want to consider a stint in the jungle. “Well I was struck when I heard someone say, ‘I quite like Nigel Farage because I saw him on I’m A Celebrity’, and I thought perhaps Sir Keir Starmer needs to go on I’m A Celeb in order for voters to know who he is,” she told Kuenssberg, adding that the most common reaction to Starmer is still “I don’t know”.

Back when Susanna made the switch to ITV, her departure was met with warm words from the BBC. The then-editor of BBC Breakfast, Adam Bullimore, said: “BBC Breakfast is a hugely successful programme and Susanna has been part of that. We are sorry she’s decided to leave and wish her the best for the future.”

Rumours swirled at the time that her break from the BBC was linked to her split from long-time partner Dominic Cotton, but she didn’t waste any time bouncing back. ITV quickly snapped her up to become one of the main faces of GMB.

Currently, Susanna co-hosts the show every Monday to Wednesday and alternates Thursdays with Richard Madeley. But there’s more change on the horizon for ITV’s daytime line-up. From January 2026, Lorraine is being cut down to just half an hour and will only air for 30 weeks a year. Loose Women will also become a seasonal fixture.

To fill the gap, GMB is set to run for an extra hour whenever Lorraine is off the air. ITV says it plans to beef up its offering with extended coverage on regional news, exclusives, investigations and big story analysis, all produced by ITV News at ITN.
