Evil Grandson Jailed After Killing His Grandad Then Heading to the Pub for More Violence

A man who beat his own grandfather to death after a day of heavy drinking has been jailed, in a case that’s shocked an entire community. Jakob Walpole, 27, was cleared of murder but found guilty of manslaughter after attacking 81-year-old John Brown in his own home, then heading out to a working men’s club where he assaulted two more men within the hour.

The three-week trial at Warwick Crown Court revealed disturbing details of what unfolded that night. CCTV cameras installed in Mr Brown’s home by concerned family members captured key evidence of what happened. Prosecutor Michael Duck KC told jurors that Walpole had been “drinking throughout the day,” starting with a bottle of vodka in the morning before heading to a football match, and spiraling into violence by nightfall, reported the Mirror.

Mr Brown, a respected figure in the local community and a renowned expert in restoring classic Jaguars, was described as frail and recently diagnosed with early dementia. Despite his vulnerability, Walpole still turned on him. After the attack at home, Walpole was caught on camera at Bulkington Working Men’s Club smashing a glass over someone’s head and physically clashing with a bar worker before being kicked out.

The jury was shown haunting footage of Mr Brown gesturing toward the camera in his bungalow shortly before the assault. Mr Duck said it could be seen as a silent cry for help, moments before the attack that led to his death six days later in hospital.

The family had noticed Walpole’s behavior deteriorating since the pandemic, prompting them to install cameras for their parents’ safety. Sadly, it wasn’t enough to prevent what happened. Mr Brown’s daughter, Lynda, read a heartbreaking victim statement in court while Walpole repeatedly shouted “shut up” from the dock.

She said, “The tears we have shed could fill buckets and I live with the knowledge my son caused the death of my beloved father.” She added that even with him behind bars, their mother lives in fear that he’ll return to torment them again one day.

Judge Kristina Montgomery KC said Mr Brown was “an exceptionally small man in deteriorating physical health” who had been exploited by his grandson. She told Walpole that his visits to his grandparents were motivated by selfishness and the intent to take money from them.

The court heard that Mr Brown had stood up to his grandson on the night of the attack, refusing to give him money, which led to the violent outburst that caused fatal head injuries.

After the verdict, Natalie Kelly from the Crown Prosecution Service said Walpole “showed no concern or remorse” and had “callously left his vulnerable and elderly grandfather severely injured” before going out to assault more people. She said the case was built on strong evidence including CCTV, mobile phone data, and messages that exposed his violent intentions.

Detective Inspector Gareth Unett said Mr Brown was “a kind, gentle, hardworking man” whose legacy lives on in both his family and the classic cars he helped preserve. He called Walpole’s actions “an act of cowardice and brutality” and said it was one of the most appalling cases he’d seen in his career.
