Fan Kicked Out of St. Louis Soccer Game for Wearing MAGA Hat: The Internet Reacts

It looks like not every MLS team is okay with fans showing up in a “Make America Great Again” hat. A recent incident at Energizer Park, home to the St. Louis City Soccer Club, has sparked a heated debate about politics in sports.

Michael Weitzel, a fan at the game, posted a video showing him being kicked out of the stadium just for wearing a MAGA hat. In the clip, he starts by introducing himself and explaining the situation: “I am Michael Weitzel, and I have been asked to leave because of the Donald Trump hat.”

The security guard who’s escorting him out, who admitted that he too supports former President Trump, tells Weitzel that the stadium is “non-political” and that they don’t allow political messaging, like the MAGA hat. Weitzel, who doesn’t seem to take too kindly to the request, keeps saying that Trump “isn’t welcome” at Energizer Park.

At one point, a staff member suggests that Weitzel could return to his seat if he removes the hat, but another security worker steps in, saying that it’s “way past that point.” And with that, Weitzel is shown leaving the game.

Unsurprisingly, the incident blew up on social media, with people on both sides of the political spectrum weighing in. One user wrote, “What happened to keeping politics out of our sports? The same people who were mad at Kaepernick for kneeling are now upset that leagues have rules about political messages. Hypocrites.”

Another person pointed out the irony of a security team being more concerned with a MAGA hat than serious issues in the city. “So in St. Louis this year, there were 66 murders, 67 kidnappings, 28 rapes, and 1,335 aggravated assaults. But there were four security personnel here to forcibly evict a peaceful soccer fan wearing a MAGA hat. Is the message that you do not want us in the city of St. Louis?”

Others were less concerned about the political debate and more about the soccer team itself. One fan tweeted, “We can all agree that St. Louis CITY SC is a trash product on the field, [expletive] ownership and now kicking out conservatives while they are minding their own business. Please get this worthless franchise out of STL.”

For its part, Energizer Park has stated that political banners are not allowed inside the stadium, but it’s still unclear if MAGA hats fall under that policy.
