British Pilot Could Be Freed After Ex-Wife’s Shocking Confession About Daughter’s Death

A British airline captain, locked up in a Kazakhstan prison for the tragic death of his one-year-old daughter, may now be able to walk free after his ex-wife reportedly confessed to the crime.

Mohamed Barakat, 46, a London-born Airbus 330 pilot, was sentenced to 20 years in a high-security prison after the death of his daughter, Sophia Barakat, in October 2019. The child was found with severe head injuries in a five-star hotel in Almaty, Kazakhstan, after what was described as a drink and drug-fuelled incident. Police claimed Barakat had violently attacked Sophia, allegedly banging her head against walls and doors before turning on his wife, reported the Mirror.

However, a shocking new twist in the case has emerged. The Kazakhstan Prosecutor’s Office has reopened the investigation after Barakat’s ex-wife, Madina Abdullayeva, 28, allegedly confessed to killing the baby. At the time of the incident, Madina had blamed her husband, shouting, “He killed my child, he hit her.” But now, it seems the narrative may be shifting.

Barakat, who has always maintained his innocence, is said to have received a series of messages from his ex-wife, which are now being examined by police. In the conversations, Madina allegedly admitted to killing their daughter. In one chilling exchange, Madina reportedly wrote, “I kill her…” to which Barakat responded, “I know you did.” She also allegedly expressed regret, repeatedly asking him to “forgive me.”

Further conversations seem to indicate that Madina had a detailed confession. On a recorded phone call, she allegedly said she broke Sophia’s neck while trying to care for her in the hotel room, explaining, “I broke her neck…”

Barakat’s defence team is now claiming that this new evidence could exonerate the pilot, who has been incarcerated for over five years. His lawyer, Din-Mukhamed Narymbetov, has pointed to several legal issues during the investigation and trial, including unreliable drug test evidence and the failure to follow proper procedures during the autopsy of the British child. The lawyer added that CCTV footage from the hotel showed Barakat walking steadily and carrying his daughter, contradicting the claims of intoxication.

One of the most significant claims involves the fact that Sophia was British, yet only one expert conducted her autopsy instead of the three required under international protocols. This has added to Barakat’s family’s belief that the trial was mishandled.

In a video message from prison, Barakat spoke out about the “confession” from his ex-wife, saying: “Two days ago, we had another argument. I told her I would never have another baby with her until she told me what happened to my daughter, Sophia Barakat.” He then claimed that Madina admitted to the crime, writing in one message: “Say thanks that I didn’t tell you.”

Despite all this, Madina has refused to comment on the case, telling reporters, “I am not going to answer these questions.”

As investigations continue, there is growing hope for Barakat’s release, as his legal team seeks to uncover the truth behind the death of Sophia Barakat.
