Former US President Donald Trump has paid a $110,000 (€104,000) fee for obstructing a significant tax fraud investigation led by New York state authorities since 2019, according to a spokesperson.

According to First Post, The New York State Supreme Court ordered Trump on April 25 to pay $10,000 a day for as long as he refuses to submit accounting and tax documents as part of the state Attorney General’s civil inquiry into the Trump Organization family business.

“On 19 May, Donald Trump paid the attorney general’s office $110,000,” a spokesperson for Ms. James’s office said.

For months, Ms. James and the Republican billionaire have been engaged in a legal battle.

Ms. James was able to persuade a New York judge on February 17 to order Mr. Trump and his children Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump to testify under oath in the context of this inquiry, in which she suspects fraudulent tax practices.

However, New York State had also requested accounting and tax documents from the Trump Organization by March 31.

Faced with Mr. Trump’s refusal, Ms. James asked on April 25 that he be charged with obstructing justice.

However, on May 6, a New York judge halted the counting of days for which he should be penalized and determined that Donald Trump would have until Friday, May 20, to pay for the period from April 25 to May 6, or $110,000 for 11 days – which he paid on Thursday.

According to Ms. James’ spokesperson, the Trump Organization had until Friday to provide sworn declarations in response to the Trump Organization’s request for accounting and tax data.

According to the same source, these records were certainly acquired and produced by a third-party firm on Thursday.
