Needless to say, Fred Armisen is not a convincing body double. “Wednesday” co-stars Jenna Ortega and Fred Armisen discovered they’re “frickin’ twins” in an “SNL” remake of “The Parent Trap.”
Last weekend, Ortega, who hosted “Saturday Night Live,” got a briefing on the Lindsay Lohan movie remake from her director (played by Bowen Yang), who explained why he included a sequence in which Hallie and Annie discover they share parents.
A crew member on the set (played by Armisen) was charged with filling in for the body double and brought a slew of inappropriate dialogue with him. “You are so annoying,” said Ortega after the two debated on whether to keep the lights on in the cabin. “And I’m starting to think you’re a real bitch,” replied Armisen, who claimed his language was part of “a little off-the-cuff thing.”
After remarks that made light of the actors’ age difference, the two later put together a ripped-up photo to reveal their parents: “Vacation” actors Ed Helms and Leslie Mann.
“So they just split us up? Why would they do that to us, we gotta kill ’em,” Armisen joked.
This was certainly a love letter to fans of The Parent Trap who still think about it on a regular basis… like me and all my fellow millennials. It used a lot of real lines from the Lohan version and even had Ortega wear the same camp outfit. It was also great to see Ortega stand up to Armisen and hold her own as he started to improvise (as Raymond) in the scene.
It is shown that the pictures of their parents match and are two halves of the same image, much like in the 1998 film. Ed Helms and Leslie Mann portray the parents this time. It’s simple, funny and evocative of a Saturday Night Live sketch that will have you eating Oreos with peanut butter.
