Denise Welch Shuts Down Loose Women Feud Rumours and Opens Up on Health
LONDON, UK – Actress and broadcaster Denise Welch has firmly denied ongoing rumours of behind-the-scenes feuds among the Loose Women panel, calling the claims “nonsense” and revealing the truth about what really goes on when the cameras stop rolling.
Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, the Waterloo Road and former Coronation Street star addressed speculation that panellists—including Janet Street-Porter, Jane Moore, Nadia Sawalha, Coleen Nolan, Ruth Langsford, GK Barry, and herself—are frequently at odds off-air.
“Depending on what we are, we are four very opinionated, strong women. Just because we disagree doesn’t mean we’re in a feud, which drives me mad,” said Welch, 66.
“I have never, and I will honestly say hand on heart, in 23 years, I have never had an argument with anybody on that show,” she added.
Denise praised the longevity and uniqueness of the ITV1 panel show, which has celebrated 25 years on air. “It was incredibly unique and original… all power to it that 25 years later we’re still going,” she said.
Proud of the programme’s diversity and age range, Denise added: “What other show not only employs older women, but reveres and celebrates the voices of older women? There’s life in these old girls yet.”
She also highlighted the panel’s ability to navigate heavy and light subjects: “There’s nothing really that we avoid talking about. Our show is anecdotal and opinion-led.”
Outside of the show, Denise has also opened up about her personal struggles, revealing she turned to food after quitting alcohol 13 years ago. She admitted: “I very quickly realised that I was in danger of swapping alcohol addiction for food addiction.”
Denise said she experienced secret binge eating and weight gain, putting on two stone after fiancé Lincoln Townley proposed. A wake-up call came when she tripped on Kingston Bridge during a theatre run and was later diagnosed with osteoarthritis and sleep apnea, both made worse by weight gain.
Motivated to change, she and Lincoln joined LighterLife, a programme focused on both psychological and nutritional health. Denise became an ambassador for the brand, citing its use of CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and its impact: “That first meeting changed my life.”
She credits the programme not only for her weight loss but also for helping her quit smoking: “I applied the same CBT techniques to cigarettes… They are treasured tools.”
Denise now uses her platform to advocate for healthier relationships with food and emotional support for those struggling. Dr Kelly, her LighterLife advisor, warns against social media diet fads: “They’re not nutritionally complete, not effective, nor sustainable, and can be dangerous.”
Welch concluded, “I am a fervent believer that this works. I’ve seen it change people’s lives—including mine.”
