Colson Smith Leaves Coronation Street After 13 Years in Emotional Scenes
Coronation Street star Colson Smith has opened up about his emotional final days on the long-running ITV soap, revealing he was “covered in blood” and walking around with a “huge gash” on his head while filming the dramatic scenes that marked the death of his character, PC Craig Tinker.
Fans were left heartbroken as Craig collapsed to the ground after being struck with a baseball bat by thug Mick (Joe Layton), a harrowing moment that brought Smith’s 13-year run on the show to a close. But for the actor himself, the farewell had been in the making for months—and it left him in tears.
“I miss Corrie. I miss going to work, I miss having a job, and I feel like nothing will ever replace that,” Colson admitted in a candid interview. “I can do anything in the rest of my career, the rest of my life, and I’m fully aware that I will never get what I have got from Coronation Street from anywhere else.”
Smith, who joined the soap at just 12 years old, reflected on how deeply integrated the show had become in his life. “I’ve been Craig for longer than I’ve not been Craig,” he said. “I’ve probably spent more time in the green room at Corrie than in my own home.”
He described the atmosphere on set as deeply familial: “The entire building’s literally a family. It almost holds more proper weight at times than your own family and your own life. You share so much with each other… I’ll miss being that little brother, that son, or that grandchild.”

Despite his affection for the show, Colson confirmed he had requested a definitive end to his character’s arc. “I knew that my time was up and I knew that Craig had backed himself into a corner that was gonna be really hard to get out of. I’d already braced myself,” he revealed to Daily Express.
“I wanted the door to be shut. I wanted to know Craig’s journey was over so I could throw myself into new beginnings.”
With his sights set on a new chapter, Colson revealed he’s pursuing a career in presenting. “I make no secret that I want to be a presenter. That’s where my love and passion lies. I enjoy being Colson, telling stories, and holding a show,” he shared.
He added with a smile, “In a really weird way, it was the right thing for me to be killed.”
